On the evening of Friday 10th February, Nottingham lit up for the city’s annual Light Night festival. It was the event’s tenth year, and once again City Arts and friends were out to amaze and entertain.

Our flock of newly illuminated puppet birds, created in collaboration with Nottingham care home residents, descended on Nottingham’s gorgeous Victorian Arboretum. There they were joined by giant tiger created and animated by artists Izzy Hollis, Lizzie Bettsworth and Connie Burley. The three emerging artists had been in residence at City Arts in the weeks leading up to the festival.

At City Arts in Hockley people visited ‘Not just white noise’, a stunning interactive installation created by renowned sculptor and light artist Raphael Daden in collaboration with Graham Elstone. Raphael and Graham worked with residents at Sycamore House, Millbeck House and The Oaks care homes, and visitors Radford Care Group, to produce the piece. Inside the building awesome folk foursome Higgs Bo’sun put on a show. At St Mary’s Church, Raph installed a patterned hand cranked lightbox that changes as light darts around the inside.

At the old Nottingham Fire Station, artist Graham Elstone created an installation inspired by folklore, wonder tales and myths. Designed for the City Arts Dome, and informed by Nottingham communities, touching ‘The Circle Squared’ triggered sounds, as well as still and moving image, co-created with Sarah Manton.

Friend of City Arts, Jessica Kemp illuminated Sneinton Market with a minilantern parade. Jess worked with St Anns Scouts and community groups at Sneinton’s Greenway Centre to build an amazing peacock lantern for the parade.
